Regular visitors to Spring Cottage will know that we lost our older Labrador Charlie last year. He was very much part of the family and year on year, guests returned to see him, not us! 🙂
We decided that adopting an unwanted dog would be a fitting way to remember Charlie by and the perfect way to say thank you for his life. After watching a television programme about a lady who had adopted a dog from Spain, I stumbled across a charity Spanish Stray Dogs UK which re-homes stray dogs from the municipal dog pound in Los Barrios, Southern Spain. I was shocked to see literally hundreds of beautiful dogs one their web site awaiting homes, some had been waiting for years.
We decided to adopt a little terrier cross called Angelo, but we kept looking at the profile of another dog Yaso who had been in the pound for nearly 5 years – no one wanted him, so we adopted him too. The charity organised pet passports and transport and the dogs were literally delivered to our door! We can highly recommend this charity for anyone able to offer an unwanted dog a home. Our two former strays have come along way since we got them, both passing their kennel club bronze good citizen award and they’re currently working towards their silver.
We appreciate that not all guests to Spring Cottage are as doggy obsessed as ourselves, and rest assured our dogs are not permitted on the guest floor of our cottage, so interaction with them is purely optional! For this reason, we are unable to have canine visitors to Spring Cottage. We do however sometimes welcome pets at our self catering cottage 2 The Court, so do enquire – we just have a few doggy house rules 🙂
Please have a look at the video from Spanish Stray dogs. The dog pounds in Spain are a very different place to an animal sanctuary in the Uk. Over crowded and only offering the very basics. Please help if you can.
